Then&Now: 1970’s Crafts

Arts and Crafts hit an all time high in America during the 1970’s. How-to Books flooded the market place on weaving, leathercraft, embroidery, quilting and woodworking. By the 1980’s the handmade passion faded. In the last several years a revival has occurred. Craft blogs have proliferated with cottage industry markets like Esty. Americans are responding by either taking up crafts themselves or supporting their favorite craftspeople.

Then- The 1970’s book “Native Funk and Flash” by Alexandra Jacopetti inspired readers to do all manner of crafts from patchwork to woodwork. It’s resurfaced and is currently a favorite among craft bloggers.

Now- Designers like Stella McCartney are tapping into the 70’s spirit in their collections. Look for handcrafted handbags like this from D&G. Notice the vintage and reproduction quilt styling.

Then- From “Native Funk and Flash”- an old chair with a recycled quilt cover.

Now- Urban Outfitters make this funky pieced-fabric covered chair.

Then- Full length skirt, knitted sweater, hand-strung beads- essential 1970’s dress code.

Now- Maxi dresses are a must for this spring and summer! This one at Missoni. Knitted cardigan from Stella McCartney. Turquoise bead necklace and carved amethyst necklace-both made by David Webb.
