  4. Hi Martha,
Thank you for figuring out a great way to organize so much visual research. I have boxes of images torn from magazines, and files on my hard drive of images I was attracted to, but all are hidden-away treasure pieces. I am adding your site to my list of fav’s and hope I will be able to use what I am learning from you.
    Kind regards, Vicki

  5. I’m not a blogger, but if I were I’d use yours from which to learn. Came across your site googling vintage wedding dresses. Now you’re on my favs. list. Happy New Years to you and your fam.

    1. Sanie- Thanks for your kind remarks about ‘nibs.’ It’s such an encouragement to know that you enjoy reading it. And Happy New Years to you, too! :)

  6. I have a question- you posted this picture of the Diane Lewis Antique Rose wedding dress? Do you have any more pictures of it? I have been trying to find pictures of it online and I am not having any luck. Could you email me any pictures, if you have any? Thanks

  7. Hello,
Where did you come across this photo of Elizabeth Saltzman’s apartment? Looks fantastic and I’d love to see the full spread.

    Thanks,
    Haley

    1. Haley- Elizabeth Saltzman’s apartment appeared in Elle Decor, October 2002. You can probably find a back issue on ebay. :)

    1. HafrenSab- I’m glad you had fun reading through ‘Nibs.’ No facebook…yet. But I am thinking of doing it.

  8. How original – I love your blogette. Will follow you with rapt interest. Am hugely jealous of your house. I had one just like it once and I never got over selling it. It was for the best at the time, but I am saddened every time I pass by.

    1. Welcome to ‘Nibs’ Fran.
We love our house and would be sorry to leave it. But at some point in the future, we plan to move to be closer to family. I just wish I could put our home on a flatbed truck and take it with me. :)

  9. Hi,

Just wondering who the author is of the ‘Wonders of the Universe’ book is, and how did you get the photo? This seems to be a rare book?

    Thank you!

    Char

    1. Char- The book doesn’t list an author just the publishers…Cassell & Company. I got the images using my scanner. You can find ‘Wonders..’ on ebay…it’s listed pretty often.

  10. Hi Martha B.
I´m looking for knitted/crochet dresses and noticed the lovely wedding dress no 18 on your blog. I have troubles opening the link – do you know more about the dress? Like where I can find it? Or more pictures?
By the way – you have a really nice blog.
    All the best from

    1. Hi Christelle- I didn’t realize you couldn’t access the link. I republished the old post…try it now. :)

  11. Hi, I’m a 40-something mature lady about to be married for the 2nd time to a lovely man who hasn’t been married before. I have my heart set on 1920’s outfits for myself and my bridesmaids and the lovely pictures on your blog have been quite inspirational – thank you so much. Now all I have to do is lose the weight so I don’t look pregnant in the photos!

    1. Hi Nicole- I’ve added two ways to subscribe to ‘Nibs’ on the front page…just under the archives.

  12. What a nice intro about you and mr nibs and getting married all over again..you have a great story here..I hope you’ll swap links with me, it would be great:-)I am also interested in a feature once my ‘vintage’ looking collection comes out:-)wonder how I could go about things to get that happening? xx Alice

We are renovating our house and it is crazy with three little girls, i wish i had a blog now. x x sallie

    1. Welcome Sallie…and glad to hear you enjoyed reading through ‘Nibs.’ I know…renovating a house with kids is hard. Hang in there! :)

  14. I stumbled across your blog and really enjoy it. I especially enjoy the old Laura Ashley fashion pictures you’ve shared. Years ago I worked for a store in the states while I attended college and have loved laura ashley ever since! I remember a friend of mine had a few fashion booklets from years past… I have searched for them ever since. Keep ’em coming! :)

    1. Hi Sissy- Nice to meet up with another person that worked for the Laura Ashley company. I’m sure we’d have lots to talk about. Concerning the old LA catalogs…you can find some of them on ebay. And don’t worry…I’ll be posting more photos from the stash I have. :)

  15. Hi Martha,

I really like your blog and your classic photos. I particularly liked the vintage press shots you put up. I’m starting a blog roll and will definitely be adding your blog.

    Great work!

    Liya

    1. Liya- I’m glad to hear you enjoyed that post on Nibs. I’ve been looking at these old press photos for a while and am just about ready to buy one for myself. :)

    1. Marianna- Thanks for stopping in. And what a pleasant surprise! That post is by far one of the most popular on my blog…all about a little girl & her birthday balloons. Give my best to your mom. :)

  16. Hi Martha – very neat ideas! I found a dress I believe you posted in a blog. Can you give me more info on it? Thank You!

  17. Hi Martha
I love the gray hoddie long knit sweater on your blog I would love to knit it can you tell me where I can find the pattern
    Thanks LR

    1. LR- The gray sweater (see post- StyleFile #8: New Directions For Knits) with the hood is by designer Alessandro Dell’Acqua in his Fall RTW 2007 collection.

  18. Martha,

Hello. I love your fireplace mantel using the fabric squares. I was wondering how you adhered the fabric to the wall. Also, how do you clean it once the fabric is up…I’m wondering if you could vacuum it with a soft brush attachment? I have Pinned this on the website Pinterest to show everyone what great work you do. I run a fabric store on ETSY under dorothyprudiefabrics, so needless to say I have a lot of fabric. Stop by my store if you get a chance. I love your ideas. Thanks.

    Dorothy

    1. Hi Dorothy,

So glad you enjoy ‘A Hippie Vibe‘ fireplace. About putting fabric on walls…there are several different methods. You can do it like wallpaper…prepping the walls with a special sealer and then a paste that’s made for hanging fabric (check your local wallpaper store as they can help you). This is the way I mounted fabric in our master bedroom. The next one is to apply furring strips (thin pieces of wood) to the walls measuring the width of your fabric. You use a staple gun and shoot staples through the fabric into the strips. The last way is bypassing the furring strips and shoot directly into the plaster/lathe or sheetrock. This is what I did for the mantel series on Nibs. When I finished, I was able to patch up any small holes left by the staples with spackle.

About cleaning…yes, I use a vacuum with a brush attachment on my bedroom walls and it works great.

      Hope this helps. :)

PS- Here are the rest of the fireplace mantel ideas. Enjoy.

    1. Shella- Thanks for checking on this. I’ve emailed the company in England and they told me they don’t ship to the states. And the U.S. stores have no plans to carry the paper.

PS- So glad you enjoy reading Nibs. :)

  19. I’m researching for 1955 vintage house in Riverside California and your lovely website popped up, so maybe you have some ideas? Thanks Amber

    1. Hi Amber- Two suggestions that can provide plenty of wonderful 1950’s inspiration…The book entitled ‘Ranch House Style’ by Katherine Ann Samon and the magazine ‘atomic ranch: midcentury marvels.’ You can find the magazine at Barnes & Noble. :)

  20. Hi! I’m a new follower. I stumbled onto your blog as I was searching for bloggers who could add to my new event “Izzy May I.” This week’s topic is food/fashion/objects/etc inspired by books. I did a culinary imitation, but if you want to join in, you can do a fashion imitation of a character or literary time period. The challenge is flexible. Very nice to meet you. I look forward to reading more posts.

  21. Hello,
I am asking for permission to use one of your images (puzzle wreath) to use for my small art studio. I would ensure that you are credited for the image (and it will provide publicity for your website).
Just wanting to ensure due diligence!
    Thanks! Sue
