Spring Dresses- 1987

Although the 1980’s was the decade of power suits and big shoulder pads, there were some designers that deviated from the prevailing  trends. One was Eileen West from San Francisco. She created a collection of romantic sleepwear (which still sells today) and apparel. In these photos, her demure striped cotton or denim dresses from spring 1987 had the surprisingly sexy detail of being backless.

  1. Oh what a fun post!! I loved Eileen West! It’s weird but I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the 90’s and how much I loved making the trip to the city to visit Laura Ashley- how the store smelled and how thrilling it was. It was always an experience.

  2. Hi Chelsea,

I’ve been thinking about the late 80’s and early 90’s too…I remember visiting an Eileen West store here and loving that dress in the top photo! :)

  3. I just found a velour long-sleeved, backless Eileen West at the thrift store…trying to date it…this helped!

    1. Wow…a velour dress? I’ll have to check the rest of the pages from that catalog to see there’s a photo of it. :)
