The symbol of peace is turning fifty this year along with the United Nations proclaiming September 21 as an International Day of Peace. For many of us in the United States the peace sign is associated with the anti-war movement of the 1960’s. But actually the history of this strange circle with three lines goes farther back- to 1958 when an English group was protesting three superpowers- England, the United States and Russia in their pursuit of the atomic bomb. As we celebrate the peace sign’s birthday, let’s also pray for real peace in our hearts and in our country.
