Garden Note #11: Allium

What is this flower?

This is called an Allium. It’s a member of the onion family. The sphere is made of masses of tiny star-shaped flowers in tones of pink and purple. In midsummer these plants can grow to five feet or taller and the spheres can seem to hover over the other plants in the garden. Using a tip from a favorite book of mine “Plant Partners” by Anna Pavord , try planting Allium with Red Orache and Japanese Anemone.

  1. My dad has these in his garden. If I’m lucky, there will be some around in August and I can put a few in recycled glass jars for wedding centerpieces…
