“Three Smashing Outfits…

…Are Better Than Twenty-Five Mistakes!”

This was the sage advice given in Glamour Magazine back in the 1960’s. And it didn’t fall on deaf ears. My mother took it to heart and has lived by it ever since. She also made sure I did too. With every purchase I’ve made and continue to make, these words have echoed in my head.  I’m actually not complaining since it has saved me many times from impulsive buying. So, now I’m passing on the same advice to Nibs readers but with some added fun. Starting today and for the next two days, the talented Roberta from ‘Camp Comfort‘ is joining me in posting a ’smashing outfit’ on each of our blogs. We both agreed that our first outfit challenge should be a casual daytime look. I chose to do a morning at the farmer’s market.

Part 2 of 3

While George Washington and his fellow officers stayed at the Ford mansion, his troops camped on the farm property owned by the Hicks family. Their wood home was quite a departure from what we saw in the mansion- here there were just three rooms. The most surprising fact was that everyone slept together in the kitchen. Mom and Dad Hicks got the only bed (more like a bench!) with the children on the floor.

The front facade of the Hicks’ home (top photo) had cedar shakes yet the back and sides of the house (above) were clapboards painted red.

There were several outer buildings on the farm including the smoke house which was used in preparing meats for the winter months.

A split log fence was a standard colonial design that helped contain livestock or designated the farm’s borders. Most of the trees that you see in the photo are ‘new growth.’ Hundreds of acres of trees were cut down by Washington’s men to build their own primitive log structures and to provide heat during the long, cold winter of 1779.

Book- ‘Born Again Vintage’

May 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

vorbagainvintage-opt

Authors, Bridgett Artose and Jen Karetnick, of the book ‘Born-Again Vintage‘ have taken the art of thrifting to a whole new level. They disassemble shirts, skirts, dresses- anything that comes their way- and make an entirely new article of clothing. They also invite viewers on their webpage to send in vintage pieces to be reworked. This could be a great idea for those brides who have Mom or Grandma’s old wedding dress and want something unique.
