It’s hard to believe that this entrance hall is from a photo taken in 1957 for House & Garden. The homeowner was the famed designer Joseph B. Platt who created the sets for Hollywood productions like ‘Gone With The Wind.’ Using the photo as guide, I searched for the key pieces that made up this fun space.
Get the look!

1. The first are the great bull heads that Platt used on the walls in honor of his great-grandfather’s job as host of the Bulls’ Head Inn in England. This one is cast from an original antique and sold through Wisteria catalog.

2. Although Platt’s chairs are antiques, these from Ebay will fit the bill- they have the rush seat and come in different wood finishes.

3. Another antique was the simple chest of drawers much like this 1860’s one.
4. Leave it to Platt to place a cut metal mirror above the chest as a pleasant surprise.

5. His selection of three modern vases with flowers was a bold move. Try these white examples from West Elm.

6. The most creative stroke is Platt’s use of additional molding painted bright red which disguises the home’s low ceilings. Suggestions- ‘ryan red’, ‘poppy’ or ‘umbria red.’

The Russian Victorian folk houses have several similarities to their western counterparts. They both were built from around 1870 to 1910. They both were one or two stories high and both were identified by their intricate decorative detail. But what I find so remarkable is that some have remained in the same Russian family for generations and consequently, the interiors are layered with history and memories.

Here large water-color paintings are merely thumb-tacked into the wall above a sofa-bed. I love the assortment of pillows- no two alike!

Flowers plucked from outside enhance an already bright yet simple dining room.

The kitchen brick walls and cupboards all get a coat of cool blue paint.

Notice the casual mix of patterns and colors for this bedroom.

The dogwood trees are in blossom now but I was at a loss as to the best way to display them indoors. I knew I wanted something a bit different and was so excited when I came across these photos from Martha Stewart. I love the simple arrangement of branches tucked into this antique Japanese wicker backpack. Now if only I could find one of these ‘backpacks.’ Any sources, readers?

My son Curtis is now a teenager. It’s hard for me to imagine that he was once small enough to hold in my arms. I look at him and wonder where all the time went. He’d be too embarrassed for me to write about him so I’ll just conclude by saying- Curt, I’m proud to be your mom. And I love you!
